Health Ministry dismisses claims of nationwide shortage of antiretroviral medicines.

The Ministry of Health has rejected claims of a shortage of antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) in the country, assuring persons living with HIV that the medicines remain available at designated health facilities across the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, the ministry said it had taken note of concerns raised by the Network of Persons Living with HIV in Ghana (NAP+ Ghana) regarding the availability of ARVs.

It said it was “not accurate” to suggest that antiretroviral medicines were unavailable in the country, adding that supplies were available at designated health facilities to support the continued treatment and care of persons living with HIV.

According to the Ministry, it is also restocking medical commodities at the Medical Stores as part of its routine procurement and supply processes.

It said plans were advanced to fulfill its procurement obligations and ensure the sustained availability and timely distribution of medicines and other essential health commodities to health facilities nationwide.

The Ministry further explained that it was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective management and timely clearance of medical commodities.

It added that it had engaged NAP+ Ghana over the concerns and assured the organization of its open-door policy in addressing issues relating to the availability and distribution of ARVs.

“The Ministry remains committed to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to ensure that persons living with HIV have uninterrupted access to the medicines and services they require,” it said.
