ABIDJAN — Côte d’Ivoire has marked its 66th Independence Anniversary with a colourful civil and military parade, celebrating the country’s journey of sovereignty, unity and economic transformation.
The celebrations, held on August 7, 2026, were anchored on the theme “Paix – Unité – Développement” (Peace – Unity – Development), highlighting the country’s commitment to national cohesion and sustainable growth since gaining independence from France in 1960.
For the first time in recent years, the main anniversary activities were moved to the Yopougon municipality in Abidjan, where thousands of citizens gathered to witness a display of national pride.
The highlight of the event was a grand parade by the Ivorian defence and security forces, involving more than 5,400 personnel and 534 specialised vehicles.
The ceremony also showcased Côte d’Ivoire’s regional and international partnerships, with military contingents from Gabon, Benin, Guinea and India joining their Ivorian counterparts in the parade.
President Alassane Ouattara hosted several dignitaries, including Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who served as the guest of honour for the anniversary celebration.
The independence anniversary also provided an opportunity to reflect on Côte d’Ivoire’s economic progress, from its foundations under the leadership of its first President, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, to its current position as the world’s leading cocoa producer and one of West Africa’s major economic hubs.
Beyond agriculture, the country has expanded its influence in areas including infrastructure, technology, tourism, music and fashion, strengthening Abidjan’s reputation as a growing centre of African culture and innovation.
As celebrations continue across the country with concerts, cultural performances and community gatherings, Ivorian leaders have urged citizens to preserve peace, unity and the values that have shaped the nation’s development.
