South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed disappointment over what he described as the lack of support from fellow African nations following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defeat leaves South Africa facing a difficult task in Group A as they seek qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament.
Speaking after the match, Williams said he was surprised by the number of African football fans who appeared to support Mexico instead of South Africa, one of the continent’s representatives at the World Cup. He called for greater unity among African nations during major international competitions.

“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said. “Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad. As Africans, let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together.”
The goalkeeper’s comments quickly generated reactions across social media platforms, with opinions divided among football fans across the continent.
While some supporters agreed with Williams, arguing that African countries should rally behind one another regardless of national differences, others pointed to longstanding tensions involving South Africa’s treatment of African migrants.
Several social media users from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and other countries cited previous incidents of xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa as a reason for their lack of support during the match. Some openly admitted backing Mexico, claiming that such incidents had weakened feelings of continental solidarity.
The debate has reignited conversations about African unity both on and off the football pitch, with many observers noting that sporting support is often influenced by political, social and historical factors.
South Africa will now shift focus to its remaining group-stage fixtures as it seeks to revive its World Cup campaign and secure a place in the next round.
