Final year students of Bawku Senior High School in the Bawku Municipal in the Upper East Region vandalized school property in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026, destroying items belonging to both staff and the school.
Speaking to the media, the Municipal Director of Education for Bawku Municipal, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, said he received a call from the headmaster at about 2:00 a.m. reporting that students had taken the law into their own hands. Unfortunately at 2 AM this morning I had a call from the headmaster of the school reporting of students causing damage and destroying properties of staff and then the school.
According to the Director, the students were angry that management and staff did not permit them to engage in “exams or practices” ahead of their final exams scheduled to end this Friday.
He noted that, the main reason as we’ve gathered is that some of the form three final year students… decided to take the law into their own hands saying that the management and staff of the school did not permit them to engage in exams or practices. Hence the damages that we have seen around the school.
The Director confirmed that a lot of property was destroyed, including electrical fittings, students’ properties, and teachers’ properties. One teacher was reportedly kidnapped and beaten by the students and has been referred for surgery.
A lot of things has been damaged. As you can see the electrical fittings, students’ properties and then both their properties and I understand one of them was kidnapped by the students and one also beaten by the students and that master has been sent to… he was first and foremost sent to the nearby hospital in Boko now he has been referred for an immediate surgery because of a damage that he received from the students.
For his part, despite the incident, the Director said the school will not be closed down. Security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order, and normal classes and exams will continue.
Investigations are ongoing to identify and sanction students involved in the vandalism.
