Red Cards Eclipse History as Mexico Launch 2026 World Cup with Victory Over South Africa

The curtain rose on the historic 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday night, but what should have been a celebration of football’s new era quickly turned into a night of controversy as three red cards overshadowed Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament opener.
With the world watching the first match of the expanded 48-team World Cup, co-hosts Mexico made a winning start before a capacity crowd in Mexico City. Yet, it was the disciplinary drama rather than the football that dominated post-match discussions.
Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio found himself at the center of the action as tensions boiled over in a fiercely contested encounter that produced three dismissals and several heated exchanges.
Mexico took the lead in the first half through Julián Quiñones, delighting home supporters and settling early nerves. South Africa remained competitive until shortly after the break when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was shown a straight red card, leaving Bafana Bafana with ten men for much of the second half.
The numerical advantage allowed Mexico to tighten their grip on the contest, with veteran striker Raúl Jiménez adding a second goal to put the hosts firmly in control and on course for three points.
The drama, however, was far from over.
As South Africa pushed to salvage something from the match, frustrations began to surface. Their problems deepened when captain Themba Zwane was sent off late in the game, reducing the African side to nine men and effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.
Even Mexico failed to escape the disciplinary turmoil. Deep into stoppage time, captain César Montes was dismissed following a cynical challenge, ensuring the opening fixture ended with both teams finishing the match a player short.
The extraordinary sequence of events transformed the tournament’s opening match into one of the most incident-filled World Cup curtain-raisers in recent memory. Three red cards, two goals and a charged atmosphere ensured the contest will be remembered as much for its controversy as for its football.
For Mexico, the result provides the perfect start to their Group A campaign and raises hopes of a successful run on home soil. For South Africa, however, the challenge now will be to recover from a bruising opening-night defeat and the likely suspensions that could complicate their path through the group stage.
As the first chapter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to a close, one thing is already certain: the tournament has announced its arrival in unforgettable fashion.
