Oppong Fosu Keeps NDC Chairmanship Cards Close, Promises Decision After Consultations

Former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Oppong Fosu, has indicated that he will announce his political intentions regarding the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairmanship race after ongoing consultations within the party are concluded.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 4, Mr. Oppong Fosu acknowledged growing speculation about his future role in the party but maintained that discussions with key stakeholders are still underway.

“At the appropriate time, I’ll put out my intentions. There are consultations going on regarding my role within the party,” he said.

The former minister revealed that the consultation process is expected to be completed by the end of June, after which he would make what he described as a “big announcement” concerning his political future.

While declining to confirm whether he would contest the National Chairmanship position, Mr. Oppong Fosu stressed the need for party members to exercise restraint and avoid rushing into leadership contests.

According to him, premature campaigns and positioning for party offices risk creating unnecessary divisions at a time when the NDC should be focused on governance and delivering on its commitments to Ghanaians.

He cautioned that internal competition must not overshadow the party’s broader responsibility of supporting the government’s development agenda and maintaining unity among members.

His comments come amid increasing discussions about future leadership positions within the governing party following its return to power.

Meanwhile, the NDC Council of Elders has also urged members to remain disciplined and avoid engaging in premature presidential campaign activities.

The Council’s caution followed a recent meeting with President John Dramani Mahama on May 29, 2026, during which issues relating to party unity, internal discipline and support for the government’s Resetting Agenda were discussed.

The elders reportedly expressed concern that early jockeying for political positions could distract the party from its immediate governance responsibilities and undermine efforts to maintain cohesion within its ranks.

Against this backdrop, Mr. Oppong Fosu’s anticipated announcement is expected to attract significant attention within the NDC, as party members and political observers closely monitor developments ahead of future internal elections.

For now, however, the former minister insists that consultations remain his priority, with a final decision on his political direction expected before the end of June.
