Stanbic Bank Contributes GH¢3 million to Black Stars World Cup Fund

Stanbic Bank Ghana has contributed an amount of GH¢3 million to support the preparation and participation of the Black Stars in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada.

The cheque for the amount was received on behalf of government by the Deputy Minister for Finance and Chairman of the Black Stars World Cup Fundraising Committee, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem.

The fundraising campaign has been launched by President John Dramani Mahama to mobilise support from corporate Ghana and individuals toward Ghana’s participation in the football mundial.

Government is seeking to raise $30 million to support the Black Stars as Ghana prepares for its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at a brief presentation ceremony, Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank, Kwamina Asomaning, disclosed the bank’s support package was designed not only to support Ghana’s participation but also to motivate the team to progress beyond the group stage.

“It’s a great pride for us to come together to support the Black Stars. As a bank, we have been inextricably linked to sports in Ghana, and sponsored table tennis, arm wrestling, badminton, tennis, hockey, basketball, swimming, and soccer has not been left out,” He stated.

“So we are quite excited today to be in a position to contribute to our participation in this global event,” he added.

According to him, part of the donation will go toward immediate tournament-related needs, while another portion has been set aside as a performance-based incentive package for the team.

He further disclosed that should the Black Stars fail to reach the latter stages of the tournament, the incentive allocation would instead be donated to a charity selected by the team.

Also making contributions during the fundraising event were Newmont Ghana, which donated $500,000, and OmniBSIC Bank, which presented GH¢250,000.

Receiving the donations, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem expressed appreciation to the corporate bodies for what he described as a patriotic gesture toward national football.

“We are grateful for the response and, as we have already indicated, we will meet here every Thursday to receive donations,” he stated.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L of the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup and will face Panama in Toronto on June 17, England in Boston on June 23, and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
