Ghana petitions AU over xenophobic attacks in South Africa

The Government of Ghana has formally petitioned the African Union (AU) to place the issue of xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa on the agenda of the upcoming Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of Heads of State and Government.

In a diplomatic communication addressed to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Ghana described the recurring attacks as a matter of urgent continental concern requiring collective action from African leaders.

The letter, signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed deep concern over repeated xenophobic violence in South Africa, which Ghana says has resulted in loss of lives, destruction of businesses and properties, and threats to the safety and dignity of African migrants.

According to Ghana, the incidents also contradict the spirit of Pan-Africanism and threaten the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to promote free movement and economic integration across the continent.

Ghana is therefore calling on the AU to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, establish a fact-finding mission into the causes of the attacks, and facilitate dialogue and reconciliation initiatives aimed at promoting tolerance and inclusion.

The Eighth AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting is scheduled to take place from June 24 to 27, 2026, in El Alamein, Egypt.
