Gov’t appeals to striking university administrators to suspend strike, seeks one month to resolve market premium concerns.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has asked the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) to give him one month to resolve grievances of members while urging the association to suspend its strike.

Members of GAUA and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) have laid down their tools in protest of what they say are disparities in market premium and other allowances between teaching and non-teaching senior staff in public universities across the country.

They argue that despite a series of engagements over their concerns, no concrete action has been taken to resolve their grievances, leaving them with no option but to embark on the industrial action.

The strike has impacted administration and operations in tertiary institutions across the country, with students bearing the brunt of the action.

At a meeting on Monday, August 17, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu appealed to the striking associations to suspend the industrial action and give the government a month to work towards resolving their concerns.

According to the minister, his office was engaging the Ministry of Finance as part of efforts to resolve the outstanding issues.

He indicated that the Finance Ministry requires verified information on the number of affected staff and the financial implications involved before decisions can be taken on the payment of the outstanding entitlements.

He therefore appealed to the university administrators to provide the necessary data to support the government’s efforts to address the matter.
