7 medical staff face sanctions over Charles Amissah’s avoidable death

Seven medical personnel from the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH), and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) are facing disciplinary action over their roles in the circumstances leading to the death of Charles Amissah.

The sanctions follow findings by the committee set up by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to investigate the widely publicised “No Bed” incident involving the accident victim.

The committee, chaired by Professor Agyemang Badu Akosa, concluded that Charles Amissah suffered a “slow death from medical neglect” after being transported between health facilities without receiving timely emergency intervention despite arriving at the hospitals alive.

According to the report, Charles Amissah died from excessive blood loss caused by severe injuries to his right upper arm and surrounding soft tissue following a road traffic accident. The committee maintained that his death could have been avoided if emergency medical care had been administered promptly.

The medical personnel facing sanctions include Dr. Anne-Marie Kudowor of the Police Hospital; Dr. Naomi Eyram Adotevi and Ms. Akosua B. Turkson of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital; as well as Dr. Ida Druant, Dr. Genevieve Adjar, Ms. Joy Daisy Nelson, and Ms. Salamatu Alhassan Aidoo of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The committee found the health professionals breached their professional duty of care in handling the case and were also untruthful during proceedings before the committee.

In total, four doctors and three nurses have been referred to the Medical and Dental Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council respectively for further disciplinary action.
