Wiiliam Osula Late Strike Ends Man United Unbeaten Run

William Osula came off the bench to score a brilliant late winner as 10-man Newcastle United handed Michael Carrick his first defeat as Manchester United manager.

Carrick, who grew up supporting Newcastle from the Gallowgate End, had warned his players that St James’ Park would be a difficult venue—and it proved exactly that. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Jacob Ramsey was sent off in the first half, Newcastle produced a spirited performance in front of a roaring home crowd.

The game looked destined for a draw after Casemiro headed home to cancel out Anthony Gordon’s penalty. But Osula had the final word in dramatic fashion. The forward cut inside the box and fired a powerful shot past goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the 90th minute, sparking wild celebrations around the stadium.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe later revealed the effort behind Osula’s decisive moment. “Will asked after training for 10 more balls yesterday. He wanted 10 more finishes—almost a carbon copy of the goal he scored today. He scored eight out of 10, and that’s all credit to the player. If you put in the work, you get the reward. I’m delighted for him.”

The match had earlier been filled with controversy. In first-half stoppage time, referee Peter Bankes sent off Ramsey for a second booking after ruling he had attempted to win a penalty by diving when he nudged the ball past Lammens. The decision angered Newcastle players, staff, and supporters.

However, Newcastle soon turned their frustration into momentum. Gordon was awarded a penalty after being brought down by Bruno Fernandes inside the box. Gordon calmly converted, sending the ball straight down the middle to score his 15th goal of the season.

Manchester United responded quickly. In the ninth minute of first-half stoppage time, Casemiro made a clever near-post run to head in Fernandes’ free-kick and restore parity.

After the break, both teams had chances to take control. Gordon missed a big opportunity for Newcastle when he fired wide at the back post, while Manchester United threatened through Leny Yoro—whose header was pushed away by Aaron Ramsdale—and substitute Joshua Zirkzee, who was also denied by the Newcastle goalkeeper.

In the end, Osula’s late strike proved decisive, lifting Newcastle up to 12th place in the table while Manchester United remain third.
