Ghana Evacuates Embassy Staff from Iran Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

The Government of Ghana has successfully evacuated all diplomatic staff from its embassy in Tehran, Iran, as regional hostilities intensify. The development was confirmed by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who announced that the evacuation was completed safely and without incident on Monday, March 2, 2026.

In a statement shared publicly, Mr. Ablakwa said the Ghanaian diplomats are “safe and in high spirits”, stressing that the move was a precautionary measure in response to escalating security risks in Iran linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iranian forces.

The Minister also disclosed that Ghana’s embassy in Iran has been closed indefinitely (sine die), citing the volatile security environment in the Middle East and the need to protect Ghanaian personnel.

The decision to evacuate follows days of heightened tensions in the region, with coordinated military strikes and retaliatory actions raising concerns for the safety of foreign missions and citizens. Ghana’s move mirrors similar actions by other countries reviewing their diplomatic presence in high-risk areas.

Government officials reiterated that the safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaian nationals remain the highest priority as the situation continues to unfold.
