The Ghana Education Service has confirmed the arrest of students involved in violent clashes that disrupted ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region.
The arrests follow a disturbing incident at the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru, where a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School was attacked with sticks and stones by students from Swedru School of Business, popularly known as SWESBUS. A video of the assault, which has since circulated on social media, shows the victim being chased and beaten by a group of students, sparking public outrage and renewed concerns about rising violence at school sporting events.
The incident adds to growing fears about indiscipline at inter-school competitions, coming just weeks after violent scenes at a zonal sports event in Koforidua led to sanctions against some schools in the Eastern Region.
In response to the latest incident, GES management, led by Director-General Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, on Monday, February 23, 2026, held a crisis meeting with regional and district education officials, heads of affected schools, sports coordinators, some students and parents.
At the meeting, officials from the Central Regional Directorate presented eyewitness accounts of the clashes and outlined immediate steps taken to restore calm, as well as proposals to tighten security and supervision at future sporting events.
Professor Davis condemned the violence, describing it as unacceptable and against the values of discipline and sportsmanship school sports are meant to promote. He endorsed the Central Regional Directorate’s decision to suspend all inter-school sporting activities in the region pending the outcome of investigations.
GES also dismissed reports that a student had died during the disturbances, saying the claim was false. The student earlier reported dead was present at the meeting, while those injured have since been discharged from hospital and are responding to treatment.
GES says all students found culpable will face sanctions in line with Service regulations and the laws of Ghana.
