“Our Laundry is Now an Emergency Ward”: Effia-Nkwanta Medical Director Cries

Sekondi, Ghana – February 24, 2026 – The Medical Director of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Dr Habib Ahmed, has issued a dire warning about the state of the hospital, urging the government to resolve a stalled rehabilitation project that is crippling the facility’s ability to serve patients.

In an interview with GBC, Dr Ahmed revealed that contractors have abandoned a critical 300-bed block project, leaving the hospital in severe disrepair. With 40% of clinical wards demolished and limited space, the hospital has been forced to use its laundry room as a makeshift emergency department.

“We have reached a breaking point. We are turning away critically ill patients because we have no space,” Dr Ahmed said, adding that this has led to an increase in mortality rates. The hospital’s inability to accept referrals is exacerbating the situation, with patients being redirected to less-equipped facilities.

Effia-Nkwanta, built in the 1940s, has been struggling to meet the needs of a growing population. The rehabilitation project, which began in 2020, was meant to transform the hospital into a modern teaching facility, but work has stalled for over a year.

Dr Ahmed has called for immediate government action, urging the validation of contractor claims to restart work and requesting temporary structures to help accommodate the surge of patients.

“This cannot wait until July. People’s lives are at stake,” he said.
