Reactions Trail NPP Primaries as Party Moves to Rebuild Unity

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has begun efforts to rally support within its rank and file following its just-ended presidential primaries that saw former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia elected as flagbearer.

Dr. Bawumia secured 56.48 percent of the total valid votes cast, defeating four other contenders in the closely watched internal contest. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second, while former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong finished third. The result sets the stage for the party’s early preparations toward the 2028 general elections.

In the lead-up to the vote, the party appeared divided, with visible factional lines among supporters of the various aspirants. However, NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah says steps are underway to foster reconciliation and bring members together behind the newly elected flagbearer.

Political observers say the scale of Dr. Bawumia’s victory presents both an opportunity and a challenge for the party. While his clear lead establishes authority, nearly 44 percent of delegates backed other candidates, raising questions about how effectively those blocs will be integrated ahead of the next general election.

Meanwhile, Pollster and Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwah, has described Bryan Acheampong’s performance as surprising. Dr Acheampong was able to flip th Voter Region, who delegates seemed to have backed Kennedy Agyapong per research. He also argued that Kennedy Agyapong’s actions in the final days of campaigning may have negatively affected his own chances in the race.

Beyond party politics, the outcome has reignited debate over the role of prophecy in Ghana’s elections. An earlier prediction by Prophet Bernard ElBernard regarding the primaries did not materialise, prompting an apology and renewed public discussion about the influence of religious pronouncements in partisan politics.

The NPP is expected to intensify internal engagement in the coming weeks as it works to consolidate support and position itself for the 2028 polls.
