South African singer Tyla has won her second Grammy Award, taking home the Best African Music Performance prize for her song “Push 2 Start.” The 24-year-old beat four other nominees — including three Nigerian artists — at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Tyla’s win saw her edge out tracks by Burna Boy, Davido (featuring Omah Lay), Ayra Starr (featuring Wizkid), and Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin. She previously won the same category in 2024 for her global hit “Water,” defeating a lineup of prominent Nigerian stars that year as well.
Reacting to her latest win, Tyla said:
“This is insane, this is so insane! I’m just so lucky to be here and I’m so proud to be African. I’m excited to see more of us over here.”
The hashtag #CongratulationsTyla trended on social media in South Africa and beyond following her victory. Fans expressed pride in her achievement, with one X user writing: “South Africa is proud of you! We are proud of you!” Another added that although they had hoped Ayra Starr might win, Tyla’s hard work deserved recognition.

Despite Afrobeats’ global popularity, Nigerian artists left the night without wins in major categories. Burna Boy was nominated for Best Global Music Album, and Angelique Kidjo for Best Global Music Performance, but neither secured a Grammy.
One notable recognition for Nigeria came posthumously: legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti received a Lifetime Achievement Award, 29 years after his death.
Another highlight of the night saw South African comedian Trevor Noah host the main Grammy ceremony for the sixth consecutive year.
