Ex-Black Stars midfield dynamo, Derek Boateng, has acknowledged the late Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio as the best Ghanaian trainer ever.
The late Sir Cecil Jones Attuwuayefio passed away ten years ago, having led an illustrious career that left a lasting legacy for future generations to follow and learn from.
He won the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup with Hearts of Oak in 2000 and 2004, as well as going further to lead Benin to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 2004 in Tunisia.
Boateng, who played under Attuquayefio in 1999, in an interview with Sporty FM, credits the coach for imbuing valuable lessons that have helped him throughout his career. “Every player knows, all my colleagues know that whatever Jones shows us during our time in the team, whenever we go to Europe, we see the same things being done by the white coaches. So for me, he is the best coach,” Boateng divulged.
Attuquayefio’s achievements include:
– CAF Champions League Winner: 2000 with Hearts of Oak
– CAF Confederation Cup Winner: 2004 with Hearts of Oak
– Ghana Premier League Winner: 5 times with Hearts of Oak
– African Coach of the Year: 2000
– First coach to qualify Benin for AFCON: 2004
He was a key member of Ghana’s 1965 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team and later managed the national team—Attuquayefio’s.
