FIFA has agreed to increase the prize money for the 2026 World Cup by 50% after a council meeting was held in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday, the 17th of December.
The increased package means that the eventual 2026 World winners will take home a historic $50 million, with runners-up receiving $33 million. Participating teams will also get $1.5 million for prep costs, guaranteeing a minimum payout of $10.5 million.
PRIZE MONEY BREAKDOWN:
Champions: $50 million
– Runners-up: $33 million
• 3rd Place: $29 million
– 4th Place: $27 million
– 5th-8th Place: $19 million
• 9th-16th Place: $15 million
– 17th-32nd Place: $11 million
– 33rd – 48th Place: $9 million
Each participating team will also receive $1.5 million to cover preparation costs, guaranteeing a minimum payout of $10.5 million. The increased prize money is part of FIFA’s efforts to support the global football community and promote youth football development.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted jointly by the US, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 48 teams. “The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The mundial will kick off on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, Mexico, and will run until July 19, 2026, in New Jersey, US.
