Transport Minister Warns Commercial Drivers Against Charging Unapproved Fares as Government Deploys Taskforce and Extra Buses

Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe has cautioned commercial drivers against charging unapproved fares, especially during peak periods, warning that offenders will face sanctions.

This warning comes amid rising complaints from passengers in major cities about extortionate charges by some commercial drivers during rush hours. The issue has contributed to an artificial shortage of vehicles, as many drivers abandon bus terminals during busy periods.

Speaking to the media in Parliament, Minister Nikpe revealed that a national taskforce has been established to clamp down on the practice. He urged commuters to report drivers engaged in fare extortion to ensure swift sanctions.

The Saboba MP also announced that starting today, the government is deploying additional buses on selected routes to manage increased passenger traffic ahead of the festive season.

Mr. Nikpe further warned that soon, only unionised drivers will be permitted to operate commercial transport services in Ghana.
