NAGRAT Warns of Nationwide Strike Over Assault on Kade SHTS Teacher

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in the Eastern Region has issued an ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service (GES), demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of all students involved in the brutal assault of a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the region.

The victim, Michael Quayson, was ambushed on the evening of October 5 by eight students, including some former students, while returning home from town. He was beaten for allegedly enforcing strict supervision during the recent examinations. A video of the violent attack has since gone viral on social media, prompting the arrest of one student who has already been granted bail.

The remaining suspects are yet to be apprehended.

Addressing the media in Koforidua on Wednesday, the Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, described the incident as unacceptable and part of an alarming trend of violent attacks against teachers nationwide.

Mr Awoonor-Yevu stated that it is the responsibility of the state, GES, and the Ministry of Education to guarantee the protection of teachers, stressing that no educator should face physical harm or psychological trauma for performing their duties.

He also called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately arrest all suspects identified in the viral video.

NAGRAT has given authorities 14 working days to ensure the full prosecution of all perpetrators and compensation for the injured teacher. Failure to do so, the union warns, will trigger a nationwide sit-down strike when school reopens, which could disrupt the 2026 academic calendar. According to the Union teacher frustration is at an all-time high, stating that the attack adds to a disturbing pattern relating to examination invigilation.

The association, therefore, hinted that it may pull out of WASSCE invigilation if attacks on teachers who volunteer for exam monitoring continue with impunity.
