Ghana’s Highlife Music and Dance Added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Highlife music and dance, a vibrant and beloved form of musical expression in Ghana, has been added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

Known for its lively rhythms, rich storytelling, and deep connection to everyday life, Highlife blends instruments such as guitars, horns, drums, xylophones, and percussion. A hallmark of the genre is its call-and-response singing style, where a lead vocalist is echoed by a chorus of backup singers. Performances are delivered in various local languages, as well as English and Pidgin.

Highlife is performed during important social events, including weddings, funerals, festivals, and naming ceremonies. Its lyrics often address pressing social issues like health, education, relationships, and societal challenges, reflecting the lived experiences of communities.

The UNESCO recognition calls attention to the need to preserve and promote this unique cultural heritage, ensuring that Highlife music and dance continue to thrive for generations to come.
