Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are casting their ballots today, Tuesday, September 2, in a by-election to choose a new Member of Parliament. The poll follows the passing of the sitting MP, Ernest Kumi.
More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to turn out in what has become a crucial showdown between Ghana’s two leading political parties—the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC is presenting Bernard Bediako Baidoo as its candidate, while the NPP is pinning its hopes on Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both men have staged vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, with senior party leaders and national executives storming the constituency to lend their support and energise the grassroots.
Security has been tightened, with the Ghana Police Service deploying over 5,500 personnel to maintain peace and order throughout the electoral process. The police have warned against voter intimidation, violence, or any breach of electoral laws, pledging swift action against those who commit such offences.
The Electoral Commission has assured the public of a transparent and credible election, noting that special measures have been implemented to ensure the timely delivery of voting materials, close supervision, and efficient collation of results.
