Breaking: Pwamang Committee recommends removal of Gertrude Torkornoo as CJ

President John Dramani Mahama will remove Chief Justice of Ghana is Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office in accordance with Article 146(1) of the 1992 constitution. According to Accra News Online sources, the removal is based on the recommendation of the Pwamang committee established to hear 3 petitions brought against the Chief Justice for her removal after the President in consultation with the Council of State established a prima facie case against her. The committee which presented its report on one of the 3 petitions disclosed the suspended CJ has requested for the proceedings on the rest of the petitions be suspended which has been granted.

The President per article 146 is bound by the recommendation of the committee which is removal of the CJ. 

Gertrude Torkornoo was suspended by President Mahama after the Pwamang committee had been established to probe the petitions. The suspended Chief Justice had a number of cases filed at the Supreme Court seeking to stop the committee from proceeding with the probe and for her reinstatement all dismissed. She consequently proceeded to the ECOWAS Community Court where she is seeking damages of $10 million.

Government is expected to announce the decision of the President based on the recommendation of the Pwamang committee soon.
