NDC gets two-thirds majority as Ewurabena Aubynn sworn in for Ablekuma North

Parliament’s Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has lauded the constituents of Ablekuma North for their pivotal role in Ghana’s democratic process following the swearing-in of Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn as their Member of Parliament.

The ceremony on Tuesday marked a significant moment, as Ayariga announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now holds a two-thirds majority in Parliament, a crucial threshold for enacting substantial constitutional reforms.

Addressing the House, Hon. Ayariga acknowledged the prolonged legal battles and electoral disputes that preceded Aubynn’s victory. “It has been a long-drawn battle, but at long last, the people of Ablekuma North now have a Member of Parliament, and we are grateful to the Almighty God for making this happen,” he stated. He also commended the resilience of the Ablekuma North electorate for their persistent fight since the election day on December 7th.

The Majority Leader emphasised the significance of Hon. Aubynn’s addition to Parliament, highlighting her strength and perseverance as a woman in politics. “She has fought a hard fight. She has demonstrated what women can do. Very few men can withstand the pressure that this young lady has withstood. With her addition to this House, the National Democratic Congress has had its number increased by one more,” Ayariga noted.

With the NDC now commanding a two-thirds majority, Hon. Ayariga pointed out the potential for significant legislative action, particularly in the realm of constitutional reforms. “Mr. Speaker, I think we now have — the NDC now has — two-thirds of the House. With this number, we can do many good things for this country. With this number, we can carry out significant constitutional reforms to make this country better,” he asserted.

Despite this newfound power, Ayariga assured Ghanaians that the NDC would exercise their majority responsibly, echoing President John Dramani Mahama’s earlier commitment. “Ghanaians today have given us all the numbers that we need to reset Ghana. And indeed, Mr. Speaker, I want to assure Ghanaians that what President John Dramani Mahama said when he was being sworn in still stands: that the NDC will not abuse the majority given to it. We will use it wisely, we will use it properly, and we will make sure that these numbers endure to the benefit of Ghanaians.”

Hon. Ayariga concluded by extending a warm welcome to Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn on behalf of the NDC parliamentary caucus, pledging their full support as she begins her term in office.
