Striking University Senior Staff Expected to Call off Industrial Action

Striking staff of tertiary institutions in the country are expected to call off their industrial action. The development follows the intervention of Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu.

The Senior Staff Association of Ghana, in collaboration with the Technical University Administrators Association and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association, declared an indefinite strike effective yesterday, Wednesday, May 21.

The unions accused both the current and previous governments of failing to honour a six-month-old agreement meant to improve their conditions of service.

Accra News Online can however confirm the associations have agreed to direct their members to return to work.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak in a social media post gave hint of the positive outcome of the engagement with the striking workers. The Builsa South MP, assured the public “

“I can report that government through the Hon. Minister of Education has swiftly intervened. Expect a positive response from the unions in due course. Though an inherited problem, it has been handled satisfactorily.” He wrote.

Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of the University of Ghana Alhaji Haruna Rafik has equally confirmed demands of the striking staff have been met and thus the public should expect the industrial action to be called off
