Tanzania studies Ghana’s gold governance as Minerals Commission delegation visits GoldBod

A 15-member delegation from the Tanzanian Minerals Commission on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, visited the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to study Ghana’s gold-buying system and regulatory framework as part of efforts to modernise Tanzania’s minerals sector.

Leader of the delegation, Dr. Theresia Numbi, said Ghana was selected after a comparative assessment of countries, noting, “We had the opportunity to go abroad, but in line with local content considerations, we chose to learn from an African country. Ghana is a pioneer and a centre of excellence in Africa.”

The delegation was received by GoldBod’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., who described the visit as an opportunity for learning, peer review and experience sharing.

Mr. Nunekpeku explained that GoldBod was established under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), with core responsibilities including gold reserve accumulation and foreign exchange generation. He noted that the Board was created to formalise a largely informal gold sector, particularly in small-scale mining.

He added that licensing for gold buying, refining and jewellery fabrication has been restricted to Ghanaians and that GoldBod’s formalisation drive has reduced unregulated foreign participation in the sector.

Members of the Tanzanian delegation engaged GoldBod officials on issues such as pricing mechanisms, royalties, corporate social responsibility and foreign financing of mining activities. The delegation expressed satisfaction with the engagement and commended GoldBod for its openness.
