Two arrested over alleged GH¢100,000 Chinese vehicle import scam in Kasoa

The Kasoa Police have arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in a vehicle import scam that reportedly defrauded a complainant of more than GH¢100,000.

The suspects, identified as Chidubem Oba Precious and Ama Mankye, are facing charges of defrauding by false pretences and abetment of crime.

According to police, the case was reported by Dr. Frederick Duah, who said he saw an advertisement on TikTok in December 2025 about the sale of Chinese vehicles by a company identified as Shipper China Qinghai Hongmeng Automobile Sales Company Limited.

Police say the complainant contacted the company and agreed to purchase a Jetour hybrid vehicle from China at a cost of US$8,800.

He allegedly paid GH¢46,895 into an Ecobank account belonging to Theresa Ziam on December 9, 2025, and later paid an additional GH¢53,428 into a GT Bank account belonging to Ama Mankye on December 18, 2025.

The complainant later received a bill of lading for the vehicle but upon presenting it at the Tema Port, officials reportedly informed him that the document was fake.

Following a complaint, police secured a court order to obtain details of the bank accounts, mobile money transactions and phone records linked to the suspects.

On June 12, 2026, investigators arrested Chidubem Oba Precious, who was found with MTN SIM cards registered in the name of Ama Mankye and payment records from the GT Bank account.

Police say the suspect later led investigators to Agbogba in Accra, where Ama Mankye was arrested.

A search conducted at Chidubem Oba Precious’ residence at Adawukwa, near Bawjiase, reportedly uncovered an ATM card linked to the GT Bank account used in the transaction.

Investigations revealed that Ama Mankye allegedly opened the account used to receive the money and later withdrew the funds for Chidubem Oba Precious, receiving GH¢1,000 in return.

The two suspects were arraigned before the Ofaakor Circuit Court on June 15, 2026, and pleaded not guilty.

Chidubem Oba Precious has been remanded into police custody to reappear on June 29, 2026, while Ama Mankye was granted bail of GH¢70,000 with a surety required to justify with landed property.

Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest Theresa Ziam, the holder of the Ecobank account into which part of the money was paid.
