Historic day for Cape Verde as Blue Sharks hold Spain

Cape Verde produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, battling to a famous 0-0 draw against former world champions Spain in their tournament debut at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The result earned the Blue Sharks their first-ever World Cup point and immediately put them on the global football map.

Spain dominated possession and created the majority of the chances, with Ferran Torres striking the crossbar and forcing several saves, while Pedri, Mikel Oyarzabal and substitute Lamine Yamal all tested the Cape Verde defence. However, the African side remained disciplined, compact and fearless throughout the 90 minutes.

The undisputed hero was veteran goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old produced a string of outstanding saves to deny Spain and preserve the historic clean sheet. Reports credited him with seven saves as he repeatedly frustrated one of the tournament favourites, earning widespread praise from fans and pundits alike.

For Cape Verde, this draw feels almost as valuable as a victory. Many expected the tournament newcomers to struggle against the European champions, but instead they showed organisation, resilience and belief. With one point already secured, the Blue Sharks have given themselves a genuine chance of competing for a place in the knockout rounds.

Cape Verde’s next challenge comes against Uruguay on June 21, while Spain face Saudi Arabia the same day. After this remarkable result, the Blue Sharks will head into those fixtures believing that anything is possible.

This was one of those rare 0-0 draws that felt unforgettable — and at the heart of it stood Vozinha, whose heroic display may go down as one of the performances of the tournament.
