Ghana moved to relocates citizen after xenophobic attack in South Africa

Ghana has begun relocating one of its citizens from South Africa following a xenophobic attack, as part of urgent measures to protect nationals abroad.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that the victim, Emmanuel Asamoah, is being evacuated after he was targeted by a vigilante group.

In a statement shared on April 25, the Minister disclosed that he had spoken directly with the victim, who remains safe despite ongoing threats.

“The Government of Ghana is relocating Mr Emmanuel Asamoah, the Ghanaian legally living in South Africa, who came under an unwarranted xenophobic attack,” he said.

Mr Ablakwa added that the intervention forms part of Ghana’s broader consular response to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad.

He also commended South African authorities for their handling of the situation, citing assurances provided by the country’s Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia.

According to the Minister, checks conducted by South African officials confirmed that Mr Asamoah was legally resident in the country, countering any claims of unlawful stay.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian authorities are continuing diplomatic engagements with their counterparts in South Africa to guarantee the safety of other Ghanaians living there.

The latest development comes amid renewed concerns over xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, raising fears about the safety of Africans living and working in the country.
