The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of betraying the religious community over the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the lawmaker questioned what he described as the government’s sudden lack of urgency in signing the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law, despite earlier assurances.
He recalled instances where political leaders sought spiritual support for their legislative agenda, saying promises were made to religious leaders to ensure the bill would be passed and assented to without delay.
“You made a promise. You went to kneel down, and the pastors that anointed you with oil prayed with you. You said to them that ‘I am going to ensure that the LGBTQ+ law is passed and I’m going to sign with ease,’” he stated.
Mr. Shaib pointed to what he described as inconsistencies in the government’s legislative approach, noting that while the NDC has passed the majority of its laws under a certificate of urgency, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill remains stalled.
He also referenced the recent arrest of an individual, Baba Amando, who allegedly posted a comment online questioning the delay in signing the bill.
“A misdemeanour offence, and he is remanded for two weeks? What is happening to state institutions? What is happening to such weaponisation, and nobody is talking about it?” he questioned.
The comments add to growing political tensions surrounding the bill, which continues to generate strong reactions from various sections of Ghanaian society.
