Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
This follows investigative reports Manasseh Azure Awuni into the allegations, which have prompted the ministry to call for a police investigation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the Ministry of Education said the minister had instructed the GES Director-General to suspend the headmaster pending full investigations into the matter.
“The Honourable Minister considers the issue serious and has directed the Director General of the Ghana Education Service to take effective immediate steps to suspend the Headmaster, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, pending full investigations into the matter,” the statement said.
The minister has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters to investigate the allegations.
“The Minister has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters to commence investigations into the matter,” the ministry added.
The ministry and the GES reiterated their position against misconduct in schools, emphasising the responsibility of teachers to protect students under their care.
“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service reiterate that we would not tolerate or countenance such alleged despicable misconduct in any educational institution across the country.”
It further stressed the duty of teachers to safeguard students.
The latest development comes about two months after a violent disturbance at Obuasi Senior High Technical School on August 5, 2026, when students allegedly attacked the headmaster following claims surrounding the discovery of a foetus buried on the school premises.
The students reportedly accused him of involvement in the incident, allegations that were not established as fact at the time.
The headmaster sustained injuries and was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for treatment. The disturbance also resulted in the destruction of school property, including the headmaster’s bungalow and vehicles.
Police arrested six students in connection with the attack and destruction of property.
In a subsequent court case, two teachers, Kwasi Brefo and Joseph Appiah Arthur, were remanded into police custody for one week over allegations that they incited students to attack the headmaster.
The school was temporarily closed following the unrest as authorities investigated the incident.
