‘Free Salomey now!’ – Women give gov’t 24-hour ultimatum to release Salomey Baffoe

Women from various parts of Accra have marched to the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), demanding the immediate release of Salomey Awitey Baffoe, who has been in custody following her arrest in connection with an ongoing cyber-related investigation.

The protesters, who took part in the “Women’s Voices Matter” demonstration, assembled at the AMA Park before marching to EOCO, where they called on President John Dramani Mahama and the relevant authorities to intervene.

Chanting “Free Salomey now!” and “John Mahama, free Salomey!”, the demonstrators accused the authorities of subjecting the 40-year-old to prolonged detention.

They subsequently issued a 24-hour ultimatum for action, insisting that the investigations should not prevent Ms. Baffoe from being released.

The demonstration was emotional, with some participants shedding tears as they demanded what they described as justice and fair treatment for Ms. Baffoe.

The protesters said their concerns extend beyond Ms. Baffoe’s case, arguing that the demonstration is also intended to draw attention to challenges affecting women and ensure that their concerns receive greater attention.

Salomey Awitey Baffoe, 40, was arrested during a midnight raid at her residence in Hansua in the Techiman Municipality of the Bono East Region on September 13.

Her bail application was rejected by the High Court on September 24 after prosecutors argued that she was still needed to assist with ongoing investigations.

The court was informed that the investigation was cyber-related and that her release could create a risk of interference with witnesses. The court, however, directed the Republic to expedite the investigations.

Ms. Baffoe is expected to return to court on Wednesday, September 30, while supporters continue to campaign for her release.
