The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans by government to recruit an additional 10,000 teachers across the country after the presentation of the 2027 Budget Statement.
According to him, the recruitment portal will be opened a day after the Finance Minister presents the budget to Parliament.
He said the exercise forms part of government’s efforts to address teacher shortages and improve the distribution of teachers, particularly in deprived communities.
“A day after the Honourable Finance Minister reads the 2027 budget, we will open the portal for the recruitment of additional 10,000 teachers across the country,” Haruna Iddrisu announced.
Out of the 10,000 positions, 500 will be dedicated to teachers of Ghanaian local languages, while another 500 positions will be reserved for persons with disabilities.
The Minister said between 500 and 1,000 positions will also be targeted at teachers who will serve in deprived areas.
Teacher deployment to be reviewed
Haruna Iddrisu also disclosed that government will review the deployment of teachers across the country to address imbalances in the distribution of teaching staff.
He explained that the challenge in some areas is not necessarily the availability of teachers, but the concentration of teachers in locations where they are less needed.
“The problem sometimes is not about their availability, but they’ve been concentrated where we need less teachers. So I’m coming to review the deployment of teachers across the country to make sure that we serve the deprived,” he said.
The Minister said the review is intended to ensure that communities facing teacher shortages receive adequate staffing.
He also announced plans to equip pupils at the basic level with skills in artificial intelligence, robotics, electronics and coding, as part of efforts to prepare them for a rapidly changing technological environment.
Meanwhile, the Minister disclosed that government is preparing to commence work on the “Teacher Dabre initiative” between October and November to begin construction of 50,000 housing unit for teachers accross the country.
He said the initiative will be led by the District Assemblies Common Fund, supported by the Ghana Social Opportunities Project (GSOP) and the pension fund, with oversight from the Ministries of Education, Local Government, and Works and Housing.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, said this monday when he commissioned six newly completed modern basic school Classroom blocks in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region as part of efforts to improve teaching and learning infrastructure.
The projects, funded by the District Assembly Common Fund and the MP’s Share of the Common fund was commissioned on Monday, September 14, 2026, at South Senchi , Tortebo, Adome, Aboasa, Asempanaye and Asikuma.
The commissioning forms part of government’s broader efforts to address infrastructure deficits in basic schools and provide pupils with safe and modern learning environments.
At the commissioning of the South Senchi model Junior High School , Mr. Iddrisu announced that the design would be adopted as a standard model for basic school infrastructure development across the country from 2027.
He said government intends to mobilise about US$200 million to replicate similar facilities nationwide.
The model school design includes a 12-unit classroom block serving kindergarten, primary and junior high school levels, as well as a dining hall, kitchen, STEM and computer laboratories, a 14-seater toilet facility and a changing room for girls.
