Jailed Vietnamese Ttycoon’s luxury assets go on auction as fraud victims await billions

Luxury handbags, high-end cars, and private yachts belonging to imprisoned Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan are being auctioned in an effort to recover a fraction of the billions she owes victims in one of the world’s largest financial fraud cases.

Lan, once among Vietnam’s wealthiest business figures, was convicted for her role in a massive banking fraud scheme involving the alleged siphoning of around $44 billion. She has received two life sentences for embezzlement, fraud, money laundering, and illegal cross-border transfers.

Authorities have already begun selling off her seized assets, including Hermes Birkin handbags that fetched more than half a million dollars at auction, as well as luxury vehicles such as a Maybach, BMW, and Lexus. The Maybach alone reportedly sold for about $630,000.

Despite the high-profile auctions, officials say the proceeds represent only a tiny fraction of the estimated $27 billion she still owes to victims. So far, total repayments have been minimal compared to the scale of the losses.

Other assets, including yachts and ships, have struggled to attract buyers even after repeated auction attempts, highlighting the difficulty of liquidating luxury property in Vietnam’s enforcement system.

Legal representatives involved in the case say auction proceeds are first used to cover enforcement costs, legal fees, and court expenses before any compensation reaches victims.

Lan’s case has become one of the most closely watched financial crime trials in Asia, underscoring both the scale of corruption allegations in Vietnam’s banking sector and the challenges authorities face in recovering stolen funds.
