Ghana Highway Authority temporarily closes section of Kumasi-Ejura road after flood damage

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of the Kumasi-Ejura Road at Sataso following extensive damage caused by recent heavy rains.

According to the Authority, the affected section was washed away during torrential rainfall on May 30, 2026, prompting emergency restoration works and the construction of a temporary diversion to maintain traffic flow. However, continued heavy rainfall over the past three days destroyed a temporary culvert installed on the diversion route, rendering the road impassable.

The GHA says the closure is necessary to protect motorists and allow engineers to undertake urgent reconstruction works on the damaged stretch.

The Authority noted that severe rainfall led to the collapse of a critical culvert structure on the road, while floodwaters also damaged the temporary diversion created to facilitate movement along the corridor. As a result, the affected section has been declared unsafe for vehicular traffic.

Motorists travelling between Kumasi and Ejura have been advised to use the diversion route through Mampong, Kofiase, Anyinasu, Sekyeredumase and Aframso. Road users travelling from Ejura towards Kumasi are expected to use the same route in reverse.

The Ghana Highway Authority has urged motorists to comply with traffic management directives, observe speed limits and cooperate with security personnel deployed along the diversion route.

The Authority says it is working with contractors around the clock to restore the damaged section and reopen the road to traffic as soon as possible.
