The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a major transformer replacement and upgrade project at the Batsonaa Primary Substation as engineers continue to work to restore power following widespread network faults that affected parts of the Ashanti, Tema and Western Regions.
In a statement issued Friday, ECG said the upgrade forms part of government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply and reducing overloads within the distribution network.
According to the company, the project follows similar upgrade works recently completed at the Adenta, Nmai Dzorm, Lashibi, Teshie-Nungua and Kumasi Ridge Primary Substations.
Under the exercise, the existing 20/26 MVA power transformer at the Batsonaa Substation will be replaced with a higher-capacity 30/39 MVA transformer.
The upgrade is scheduled to take place from Sunday, May 31 to Monday, June 1, 2026, with phased power interruptions expected to last approximately six hours for each affected group.
ECG explained that Group A areas, including Mawako Fast Food, Alfa Trading, Goil Filling Station, Spintex Plaza, Coca Cola Factory, Kasapreko, China Mall and surrounding industries along the Spintex Road, will experience outages from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, and again from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1.
Group B, which includes Wattson Factory, First Bank, Stanbic Bank, GCB Bank, Access Bank, UBA Bank, Tropical Cables and nearby facilities, will be affected from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Group C areas such as Shop N Save, Entrance University, Nasco Shop, Kasapreko, Devtraco Ltd, Indomine Factory and surrounding communities along the Spintex Road will experience outages from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The planned maintenance comes amid multiple network faults recorded across parts of the country on Friday.
In the Ashanti South Region, ECG said faults affected communities including Edubiase, Fumso, Kwabenakwa, Asonkore, Boko, Twedie, Foase, Ntronntroso, Trabuom, Ofoase, Manso Nkwanta, Dadiesoaba and Asafo.
In the Tema Region, outages impacted areas such as Wildlife, PW Quarries, Eastern Quarries, Twin Quarries, Bright Cement, Mobole, Afienya Youth Leadership Training Centre, Community 25 Mall, Jordan City, Santor, Nelplast and Kubekro.
The company also reported an upstream challenge in the Tema Region that disrupted supply to Afienya, Apollonia City, Katamanso, Devtraco, Dawhenya, Prampram, Central University and several surrounding communities.
In the Western Region, a faulty transformer at Nkotompo left Nkotompo, Ngyeramoabekam and nearby areas without power.
ECG apologised to customers affected by both the scheduled upgrade works and the unplanned outages, assuring the public that engineers are working diligently to resolve all faults while improving the long-term stability of the electricity network.
