The Ministry of Health has attributed delays in the operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital to procurement irregularities and unresolved contractual issues.
The 120-bed facility, located in Weija-Gbawe and completed in early 2025, is expected to serve as a major referral centre for paediatric care, helping to ease congestion at existing health facilities.
The explanation follows a protest by residents on May 5, 2026, demanding the immediate opening of the hospital.
In a statement, Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman said the project—funded by the World Bank—faced setbacks after concerns were raised over alleged “misprocurement.”
According to the Ministry, the World Bank flagged irregularities, including claims that some medical equipment costs had been inflated to as much as 11 times their actual value. This prompted the funding partner to withhold payment of outstanding sums.
The Ministry indicated that although it was ready to commission the hospital, the contractor halted the process, insisting that all outstanding issues be resolved before access to the facility could be granted.
Officials say engagements are ongoing to resolve the impasse and ensure the facility becomes operational.
The Ministry has also appealed for calm, assuring the public of its commitment to delivering specialised healthcare services for children.
