NAIMOS storms Birim River, destroys over 30 Chanfang machines in Akurofufu crackdown

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, disrupting operations along the Birim River at Akurofufu in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region.

In an early morning raid on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the task force targeted illegal mining activities blamed for severe pollution and the diversion of sections of the river.

Upon arrival, the team encountered about 200 individuals actively engaged in galamsey. However, the miners fled into nearby bushes on sighting the advancing task force, evading arrest.

Despite the escape, the operation led to the destruction of significant mining equipment. Over 30 chanfang machines were burnt, along with 15 wooden platforms and several boards used in gold washing. Pipe hoses and other materials used in the illegal operations were also destroyed.

NAIMOS says the operation forms part of a broader nationwide effort to clamp down on illegal mining, particularly along water bodies and in ecologically sensitive areas.

The Secretariat reiterated its commitment to protecting Ghana’s environment, stressing that operations will continue to target activities that pollute rivers, destroy forest reserves, and involve the use of harmful chemicals.
