NAIMOS intensifies crackdown on illegal mining along Agona Nkwanta–Esiama highway

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has stepped up its nationwide fight against illegal mining, targeting operations along the Agona Nkwanta–Esiama highway corridor.

During coordinated raids on April 29, 2026, task force personnel encountered about 40 illegal miners operating less than 40 metres from the main highway, openly extracting and processing gold using changfang machines, water pumps and hose systems.

Authorities say the operations led to significant environmental damage, including pollution of nearby water bodies and the destruction of a palm plantation. The degraded land, officials warn, poses a serious safety risk to motorists and pedestrians due to unstable terrain along the highway.

In response, the task force destroyed 12 changfang machines, eight water pumping machines, four wooden washing platforms, several industrial hoses and gold trapping carpets. Two motorbikes belonging to the miners were also seized.

NAIMOS says the operation highlights the continued defiance of illegal miners despite ongoing enforcement efforts, stressing the need for sustained crackdowns, enhanced surveillance and stronger public education on the dangers of galamsey.

The Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the environment and safeguarding public safety, particularly along critical national infrastructure.
