The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed the persistent power outages being experienced across the country to years of inadequate investment in electricity distribution infrastructure.
According to the power distributor, successive governments have failed to consistently invest in critical components such as transformers, distribution lines, and other equipment required to deliver electricity efficiently to end users.
ECG says this long-standing gap has led to widespread overloading of transformers, particularly in urban centres where population growth and increased electricity demand have outpaced infrastructure expansion.
To address the situation, the company has undertaken a comprehensive system audit and is moving to replace about 200 ageing transformers as part of efforts to stabilise power supply and reduce outages.
Speaking to the media, Acting Managing Director of ECG, Julius Kwame Kpekpena, said the intervention forms part of a broader strategy to modernise the distribution network and improve service delivery nationwide.
He noted that the planned upgrades are expected to ease pressure on overloaded systems and ensure a more reliable flow of electricity to homes and businesses.
