“No Dumsor, Just Sabotage” – Ashanti NDC chair calls for removal of NAPO-era engineers

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi, has called on the Minister for Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, to urgently reshuffle engineers in the region, accusing some of sabotaging government efforts amid ongoing power outages.

Speaking in an interview Nana Kwasi dismissed suggestions of a return to “dumsor” — Ghana’s prolonged power crisis — insisting that the current disruptions are due to inefficiencies rather than systemic failure.

“There’s no dumsor. If there are challenges, the engineers must let us know,” he stated.

He specifically accused engineers appointed during the tenure of former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, of underperformance and alleged sabotage.

“I am not mincing words: if the Energy Minister is listening, the majority of the engineers NAPO brought into the region must be shaken up, or they will disgrace us,” he warned.

Nana Kwasi recounted a recent incident in an unnamed district, where residents had been experiencing persistent power outages. According to him, after contacting the District Chief Executive and confronting the district engineer directly, electricity was restored within minutes.

“I questioned him, fought with him, and threatened that if he didn’t take care, I’d ensure he’s transferred. Within five minutes, the people started calling saying the lights had come on,” he said.

He described such incidents as clear evidence that some engineers are “sleeping on the job” and called for decisive action to address the situation.

While acknowledging reports of weak transformers in some areas, he maintained that the outages do not amount to a return of dumsor.

Pressed on whether the engineers were deliberately undermining the government, Nana Kwasi stood by his claims, citing his personal experience as proof.

The Energy Minister has previously assured the public of stable power supply, stating that adequate fuel and resources are available to sustain electricity generation.

However, Nana Kwasi cautioned that without immediate intervention, the disruptions could persist.

“The engineers from the NAPO era in the Ashanti Region — if we don’t change most of them, this will continue,” he stressed.
