President John Dramani Mahama has praised Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWCL), for his efforts in advancing the Damongo Water Project.
Speaking during the 50th anniversary of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe, the President highlighted the importance of access to potable water, calling it a fundamental necessity for development.
“Regarding access to safe water, we know it is a right, not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother for the very good work he has done; we did not send him to the Ghana Water Company for nothing. He has done all the legwork, and I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister for Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damongo Water Supply System to start. Garlus, well done, thank you very much,” Mahama said.
The Damongo Water Project has long been a major concern for local communities relying on limited and unreliable water sources. Since January 2025, Mutawakilu has implemented reforms to improve GWCL’s performance, focusing on financial management, operational efficiency, and expansion of water infrastructure.
Key projects under development include the Damongo, Tamale, and Yendi water supply systems, aligning with the government’s goal to increase access to safe drinking water under Sustainable Development Goal Six. The signing of the financial commitment on March 31, 2026, marks the start of procurement and construction.
The President’s remarks reflect growing confidence in the project, with stakeholders hopeful that it will deliver lasting relief to communities affected by persistent water shortages in the Savannah Region.
