Iran-linked hackers breach FBI Director Kash Patel’s personal email, agency confirms

Iran-linked hackers have breached the personal email account of FBI Director Kash Patel, according to a statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The group behind the attack, identified as Handala Hack Team, claimed responsibility and published what it alleges are materials taken from Patel’s account, including a purported résumé and personal photographs. The group accompanied the release with a warning message stating, “This is just our beginning.”

The FBI acknowledged the incident, describing it as an attempt by “malicious actors” to target Patel’s personal communications. However, the agency emphasized that the compromised material is “historical in nature” and does not involve classified or government information.

U.S. authorities are offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the identification or capture of individuals linked to the hacking group.

Cybersecurity analysts suggest the leaked content may not be from a recent breach. Experts say the materials appear to originate from an earlier compromise, potentially dating back to 2024, before Patel assumed leadership of the FBI.

Images circulating online—bearing the hackers’ watermark—show Patel in various informal settings, including at social venues and alongside luxury items. The authenticity of the leaked documents has not been independently verified.

The Handala group framed the attack as retaliation against recent U.S. actions targeting its operations. Earlier in March, the United States Department of Justice announced the seizure of several domains allegedly used by the group in cyber operations tied to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security.

Officials say those platforms were used to conduct influence campaigns, spread propaganda, and claim responsibility for cyberattacks.

Cybersecurity experts note that personal email accounts—unlike government systems—often lack advanced protections, making them more vulnerable targets for threat actors seeking high-profile exposure.

The incident underscores ongoing cyber tensions between the United States and Iran-linked groups, as well as the increasing use of hacking operations for both intelligence gathering and psychological impact.

The FBI continues to investigate the breach.
