In a thrilling Champions League knockout phase play-off, Club Brugge staged two remarkable comebacks against Atletico Madrid, securing a late equalizer to keep the tie wide open.
Atletico Madrid had seized control in the first half, with Julian Alvarez converting a penalty after a handball by Joaquin Seys, and Ademola Lookman netting on his European debut just before halftime. At 2-0 down, Club Brugge looked to be in deep trouble against Diego Simeone’s side.
However, the home team came out fighting in the second half. Raphael Onyedika quickly pulled one back, giving Club Brugge a much-needed boost. Then, on the hour mark, the impressive Nicolo Tresoldi skillfully guided the ball past Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak, leveling the score and seemingly putting Club Brugge in a strong position for an upset. This comeback felt deserved, especially after Onyedika had threatened to score twice in the first half when Atletico had sat back after their early lead.
Simeone, Atletico’s manager, looked increasingly frustrated on the sidelines. His team had recently thrashed Barcelona but then surprisingly lost to Rayo Vallecano, and this match was proving equally unpredictable. He brought on Alexander Sorloth, a substitution that shifted the momentum. Sorloth immediately made an impact, hitting the woodwork and then pressuring Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez into scoring an unfortunate own goal, which put Atletico back in the lead.
But Club Brugge refused to give up. In the 89th minute, Greek international Christos Tzolis unleashed a powerful shot, finding the back of the net and snatching a dramatic equalizer. This back-and-forth contest ended 3-3, leaving both teams with everything to play for in the return leg in Madrid on Tuesday, February 24th, at
8 pm. The victor will then advance to face either Liverpool or Tottenham in the last 16.
