The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has introduced a Private Member’s Bill to amend the Political Parties Act, 2000 (Act 574) and establish a comprehensive framework for campaign financing in Ghana.
The Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2026 seeks to regulate the sources of campaign funds, set limits on contributions and expenditures, and strengthen oversight of party financing. It proposes capping individual contributions at GH¢500,000 for presidential candidates and GH¢100,000 for parliamentary candidates, with spending limits of GH¢5 million and GH¢500,000 respectively.
The bill also restricts donations to Ghanaian citizens and registered entities, bans foreign and anonymous contributions, and proposes a Political Parties Development Fund administered by the Electoral Commission, with audits by the Auditor-General.
MP Frimpong highlighted that the rising cost of politics threatens democratic participation, excluding women, youth, and candidates with limited means. The bill also addresses vote-buying and corruption concerns, referencing allegations from recent NPP and NDC primaries now before the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
