The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over a brutal attack on staff of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition by officers of the Ghana Police Service.
The incident occurred on January 15, 2026, while ministry staff were commuting to work in an official bus. A video circulating online shows men attacking the occupants of the bus. Initially believed to be National Security personnel, the ministry later clarified that the attackers were police officers, including some from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Emergency Response Unit.
In a statement, the minister condemned the assault as an abuse of power and a betrayal of public trust. The ministry also rejected claims that the attack was triggered by an alleged insult over reckless driving, describing such justification as unacceptable.
The petition demands a full and impartial investigation into the matter and urges the Police Service and the Attorney-General’s office to take swift action to ensure accountability.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Lawyer Richmond Rockson, stressed that even if there was a verbal exchange, police officers are expected to adhere to proper law enforcement procedures and not resort to violence. He also said that some staff were injured and taken to the Police Hospital for treatment.
No official response has yet been issued by the Ghana Police Service as investigations continue.
