Nvidia has introduced Alpamayo, a new AI-powered platform for autonomous vehicles, at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas. The system aims to bring “reasoning” capabilities to self-driving cars, enabling them to handle complex scenarios safely and explain their driving decisions.
CEO Jensen Huang revealed that Nvidia is collaborating with Mercedes to launch a driverless car powered by Alpamayo in the US soon, with plans to expand to Europe and Asia. The technology learned from human drivers and promises natural driving behavior.
Alpamayo is open-source, with its code available on Hugging Face for researchers to access and retrain. Huang envisions a future where all vehicles are autonomous.
The announcement positions Nvidia to compete with companies like Tesla, whose Autopilot system also focuses on driver assistance. Nvidia plans to launch a robotaxi service next year but has not disclosed partners or locations.
Additionally, Nvidia revealed its upcoming Rubin AI chips, designed to be more energy-efficient and cost-effective, with production underway and release expected later this year.
