The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Ghana to immediately reverse any fee increases and new dues introduced for the 2025/2026 academic year.
In a letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the Vice Chancellor, GTEC emphasized that publicly funded universities must follow proper procedures, including obtaining Parliamentary approval before reviewing student fees, as mandated by law.
GTEC has instructed the university to credit continuing students who overpaid compared to last year’s fees, refund final-year students who paid excess fees, and revert all dues—including SRC and GRASSAG fees—to the previous academic year’s rates. The Commission also ordered the suspension of any newly introduced fees such as the 75th Anniversary dues and Development Levy, except for fees already in place.
This action follows last week’s announcement of a controversial 25% fee increase across all colleges, which the university said was largely due to third-party charges imposed by student leadership.
GTEC has given the University of Ghana a deadline of January 12, 2026, to provide evidence of compliance, warning that failure to comply will result in serious regulatory sanctions.
