Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has resumed crude oil refining operations after several years of inactivity, marking a key step in revitalizing Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
The refinery recently completed major Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) on its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) over a three-month period from August to October 2025. The maintenance work met international engineering, safety, and operational standards.
Following these repairs, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) conducted regulatory inspections and confirmed TOR’s compliance with all safety and operational requirements, clearing the refinery to resume production.
Currently operating at 28,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd), TOR plans to increase capacity to its original 45,000 bpsd following the upcoming commissioning of a new furnace, F-61. There are also medium-term plans to expand capacity further to 60,000 bpsd with the installation of a new Air-Cooler.
According to a statement from TOR, the refinery will continue phased operations over the coming months to stabilize its systems and optimize performance ahead of official recommissioning.
The company also acknowledged the support of government officials, including President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, in the refinery’s restoration efforts.
TOR’s management and workforce have been credited for their dedication throughout the revival process, as the refinery seeks to reestablish itself as a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy infrastructure.
