The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid glowing tribute to former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as “boldness personified” and a trailblazer whose life reshaped Ghana’s political and social landscape.
Delivering the eulogy, NDC General Secretary Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said the party bows “with hearts full of reverence” to honour a woman who was not just a First Lady but “the very heartbeat of a movement.”

Key Highlights of Her Legacy
- Champion for Women: From her early career at the Ghana Tourist Board and Union Trading Company, Konadu engaged directly with the struggles of ordinary women, igniting her lifelong fight for dignity and justice.
- 31st December Women’s Movement: Founded in the 1980s, the movement became a nationwide engine of empowerment, nurturing community leadership and restoring confidence to millions of women.
- Education Pioneer: Under her leadership, more than 870 early childhood centers were established, giving thousands of children access to education that transformed their futures.
- Legal Reforms: Her advocacy influenced the passage of the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111), widely known as the “Nana Konadu Law,” protecting widows from injustice.
- Global Voice: At the 1995 Beijing Conference, she spoke with authority for the African girl child, earning international respect.
- Political Pillar: A founding mother of the NDC, she organised women, built grassroots structures, and in 2009 was elected First Vice Chairperson of the party. She later became the first woman to contest Ghana’s presidency, defying limits and reinforcing her belief that “leadership is not a man’s birthright.”
A Lasting Impact
Kwetey emphasized that Konadu’s legacy lives on in “every confident girl who walks into a classroom, every widow protected by law, every woman who now knows she can lead, and every community where early education took root.”
The tribute closed with gratitude: “Thank you, Nana Konadu. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for the lives you uplifted.”
Her race may be run, but her fire, the NDC declared, continues to burn in a new generation unafraid to be bold.
